Hellooo! Howdy!!! Hi!!!!

Ok, so Medusa and I haven't been here in months, but I feel in the mood for some time at Crazy Medusa's lounge. And I KNOW some people have this in their rss readers. So here I am! Hi! How are you?!?!

(more after I alert people through my blog that I've decided to stop on by to Crazy Medusa's.)

I'm watching a show on Sci-Fi called Sanctuary while I revise my lecture for Monday.

What are the rest of you up to?

Dr. Crazy said...

Well, I've actually no clue what the Illustrious Medusa is up to ( I suspect she's with The Someone doing Something) but I've been drinking some wine, and I've talked to a bunch of long distance friends on the phone tonight, and I was feeling CM's Lounge-y. This could have something to do with the fact that I've had a good bit of wine :)

The History Enthusiast said...

Yay for wine! Sadly, if I drink wine this late at night I'll never be able to sleep :-).

Dr. Crazy said...

Well, to be fair, I BEGAN drinking the wine hours ago. So I wasn't thinking about potential sleeplessness when I started :) Did you talk to your friend Jeremy about the tragic sexism exchange and is all now well?

The History Enthusiast said...

I saw him briefly today, but I was meeting with a student and he was just stopping by the office (there are about 15 of us who share it) to pick up his stuff.

Thanks for your responses, by the way. I totally agree with what you said and I appreciate your help.

And, yay for Facebook! I checked out your profile today.

Hello! I just finished painting my nails sparkly glitter red! I never do this - burgundy or nude are my usual shades of choice, but since today was the last day of class til after Thankgiving, I was in a festive mood.

(Of course, I'd be more festive if I didn't know I have to spend the break studying like mad for finals, but hey, at least I don't have to get up early tomorrow.)

(And reviewing last year's posts, I'm totally traumatized by Cisco Adler's balls.)

k8 said...

Greetings! I'm posting pictures of my kitties on flickr. I think this officially qualifies as a pitiful friday night.

Dr. Crazy said...

History Enthusiast: I was happy to respond back to him. Not to be a jerk, but he needed it. I know he's your friend, and I'm sure he's a great guy, but at the end of the day, there are a lot of clueless great guys, esp. where the whole sexism thing is concerned. If I can do my part to wake them up, I'm game.

NK: Yay on the sparkly nails! And dude, everybody's traumatized by Cisco Adler's balls. Because you know why? THEY ARE SO TOTALLY TRAUMATIZING!!!

The History Enthusiast said...

New Kid--Sounds like fun! I have mostly a full week off because I only teach MWF and Wed. class is canceled.

k8--My night seems pretty pitiful too. Writing lectures and watching TV on a Friday night is a clear sign that I am not nearly as cool as I wish I was.

Dr. Crazy said...

Ooh! Kitties! I'm mad at my kitties, for they insist on traumatizing me with their antics. And yet, I love them purely and truly. And I'm hoping that the Man-Kitty doesn't accost (or growl at or hiss at) FB when he's here on Tuesday. And yet, I feel sure he will, alas.

The History Enthusiast said...

Crazy--Yeah, I agree that he needed it. He tends to be a bit arrogant, which in this case was readily apparent.

New Kid--I can't bear to look at his balls again since I was sufficiently...educated...the last time, LOL.

k8 said...

I've only had mine for a week (tomorrow), so I haven't had time to be traumatized. I do love them. I really missed having a cat. My little siamese died just shy of her 19th birthday, so it took me a little time to be ready for another pet.

The History Enthusiast said...

Ohhh!!! I just saw a commercial for a Mork and Mindy marathon on TV next Saturday! Did any of you watch that show?

Anonymous said...

k8 - but your kitties are so CUTE!! I love them!

I went to your site, T.H.E., and saw the exchange, and am going to be completely ageist: god, he sounds young! (That's not meant as a slam - I'm sure he's a nice guy.) Anyway, great points, Dr. C!

My husband is currently looking at pictures of Sphynx and Rex cats online. No, I don't know why.

k8 said...

Not regularly, but yes. TV wasn't encouraged in our house when I was growing up. There's nothing worse than being out of the saturday morning cartoon loop b/c you had to clean out horse stalls every saturday morning knowing all the while that your friends were still in pjs sitting in front of the tv.

Anonymous said...

(When I say young, too, I don't mean to say that all young folk are clueless, but that there's a particular kind of cluelessness that goes with being young. But not all young people have it or anything.)

(And yes, I now sound like an old biddy, talking about teh young people.)

k8 said...

T.H.E. - it took a lot of self-control on my part to not interject a "If you don't see it you're part of the problem" comment in one of those threads.

Inside the Philosophy Factory said...

New Kid -- I love the sparkly polish idea...

My hubby just finished a total nuclear war in some game... which, even though I know it's just a game -- kind of scares the just war theorist in me...

Anonymous said...

k8 - my sister works in a horse barn! She gets, like, no time off. So she would get your Saturday morning feeling.

I actually didn't watch Mork and Mindy much (though I watched plenty of TV!), but I remember it.

k8 said...

"Let's Hear It For The Boy" just came on the radio. I am awash in nostalgia.

Inside the Philosophy Factory said...

I just wanted to pop in and say hi... but, I need to sleep now...

The History Enthusiast said...

k8--if it makes you feel better we only watched shows as a family, and since my parents weren't into cartoons I watched very few cartoons. We watched The Cosby Show, Golden Girls, The Facts of Life, and stuff like that, but we didn't watch much on the weekends.

NK--please feel free to add to the exchange over on my blog. He is 29 (I think?), so he's actually a smidge older than me (I'll be 27 in a little over a month). He does sound young, though, so I know what you mean. His wife is my age and she's the sweetest person on the planet; I sometimes wonder how she puts up with him ;-), but in all honesty they really are made for each other.

Dr. Crazy said...

K8, your kitties are AWESOME (not in the least because they resemble Young Mr. Stripey, who is the most affectionate and lovey kitty ever). Dude, If I'd just gotten some kittens, I'd surely be home taking pics of them :) As you might imagine!

As for why NLLDH is looking at the Sphynx and Rex cats... well, I cannot imagine. That said, perhaps it's that he just wants to be one with some Aristocratic style cats right now? The only thing to do is to make one of the other cats accost him to remind him that the domestic cats are the bomb:)

And I'm with you with the ageist thing, NK, though I tried REALLY HARD really to respond. My first feeling in response to T.H.E.'s friend was that he was a douchebag from my grad program that, by virtue of the fact that I'm done, I shouldn't have to deal with. I'll say, for anybody who needs the affirmation, the best thing about finishing the Ph.D. for me was that I no longer needed to deal with the grad student douchebags that I had to deal with in my program :)

The History Enthusiast said...

...I mean, made for each other in a good way. They're a cute couple.

Anonymous said...

Ah, well, then it's just cluelessness! It's just funny how things read online sometimes. It must be because I'd have thought he couldn't get that far in life without having to think about his own privilege - but I guess not! :-P

Sleep well, ItPF! I will probably go to bed soon myself (only got about 5 hours of sleep last night, interrupted TWICE by cat antics. I think Eldest and Middle Cat are still figuring out what's going on now that Pekoe's not here. Sniff).

k8 said...

Thanks! The only one that qualifies as a kitten, though, is Plum (the grey one). Sophie was estimated to be maybe 1-2 years old. Hard to tell though.

I get a little photo crazy. I've taken a ridiculous number of pictures of my parents peke-a-poo Chewbacca, as can be seen in my flickr set titled "Chewbacca is Everywhere." I think there are over 400 pics in it.

Dr. Crazy said...

I'm sure they are, H.E. The thing about guys like that is they take all of their douchebaggery out on strangers, because they're actually really great to the people they love. That's the thing: I think he's probably a good guy - I think he responded the way he did to the whole sexism in academe thing in the way that he did precisely because he's "enlightened."

The History Enthusiast said...

k8--I am going to head over and look at your cat pics!

And, while I'm sure that working in a barn has serious down sides, I have always loved horses and would totally love to get one someday.

As for my friend Jeremy, I totally wanted to say that too, but since I know him IRL I thought it might be best for me to bite my tongue. I tend to stick my foot in my mouth A LOT. That's something that I am working on.

Anonymous said...

You know, the nice thing about being so much older than most of my classmates (though thankfully not a TOTAL outlier) is that I don't really care so much about the douchebags being douchebaggy. I mean, it's not like I want to go out to the bars with them or anything! Things that would have driven me nuts if I'd gone to law school right after undergrad wash right over me now. I am Zen. :-)

The History Enthusiast said...

Crazy--That's a good point. I guess I hadn't thought of it that way.

I'm off to see kitty pics now...

Dr. Crazy said...

NK - I'm so sorry about Pekoe, btw. I know I expressed my condolences over at you blog but still. It's just awful. Also, if you're still around, how is the law school thing going? I feel like it's so awesome that you've abandoned the professoriate to go in that direction! This could be because I feel like anybody who pursues the professoriate is an idiot, including me, but, well, you know :)

Anonymous said...

And about guys who end up with lovely people and treat them well and take out their douchebaggery on strangers - I had a sudden flash to D.ean D.ad! (and his "women hate nice guys" theories. God knows why that has stuck with me!)

Anonymous said...

Thank you for the condolences - we are very very sad, but it was so the right thing to do. I was very relieved we could help him not suffer. But it sucks. Last night when Eldest Cat was tromping all over the bed (and poking us in the face), I kept thinking, "I miss Pekoe!" (Pekoe used to sleep on the bed and not let the other cats join us; and when Pekoe was on the bed he slept like a big cuddly log and didn't bother us at all.)

Dr. Crazy said...

Oh God. Dean Dad. I can't even talk about him. I haven't commented over there since August, when he called me "ignorant" and other awful things because I disagreed with him. Is it just me, or is he utterly awful and heteronormative and ultimately sexist, even though he thinks he's like some liberal poster-child? It may just be me. That said, if somebody calls me ignorant, and treats me badly in comments, I stop commenting.

k8 said...

The "enlightened" white male is a particularly annoying subset of the species.

And now Pop Goes The World came on.

~profgrrrrl~ said...

A drive by "hi" from me ... and now I have to put my exhausted and hugely pregnant self to bed. With no wine. Sigh. (But with my husband, which is a good and not everyday event in my life.)

Have fun!

Dr. Crazy said...

NK, this won't make you feel better, but you're so lucky that Pekoe wouldn't let the others sleep with you! Oliver and Hugo (Man-Kitty and Mr. Stripey, respectively) both hog the whole freaking bed, and they are two cats, and I am a HUMAN, and it's a queen-sized bed!

Anonymous said...

And law school! Law school is good. Contrary to all the advice that legal writing is REALLY HARD and people have a REALLY HARD TIME adjusting to the new style, I keep getting the top scores in my section. Hee. Maybe that will make up for some of my other grades, which I doubt will be at the top of my section?? I do like the writing/research part a lot, but haven't yet figured out how long it takes me to do stuff so I keep getting no sleep/turning things in 5 minutes before deadline. I'd like to get better at not doing that...

It's hard to know how I'm doing because we get almost no grades (except in writing) until our final exams, which constitute the ENTIRE course grade. But I don't feel confused or swamped or lost or any of the other things new law students are purported to feel. I'm not sure I have great study habits for upcoming exams - I always took classes with papers! - but eh, I'll muddle through.

Occasionally it is very hard to remember, though, that I am NOT the expert in the room, and that just because I think I know something, I might not actually know it as well as I think I do, as unlike medieval history, I have NOT studied this for 10+ years. I think I have to avoid the tutoring sessions, because I keep butting in trying to answer other students' questions. Which makes me feel like an UTTER heel. But then I turn around and do it again!

Dr. Crazy said...

Hi Profgrrl! I know you've probably already headed to bed, but I'm so glad you stopped by!

Anonymous said...

Oh, yeah, I agree about DD. But then, I mortally offended him when I questioned whether 36 was too young to be a dean. (Actually, that conversation helped me rethink some stuff. But, yeah.)

And those are great cat names! My second cousin's name is Oliver (and he's an honest to god British schoolboy).

PG, sleep well, and so glad you're with the husband!

k8 said...

I have not yet let my cats into my bedroom. I'm afraid that Plum will decide it's play time in the middle of the night and attack me. That, and I'm feeling a very little guilty b/c about nine years ago I promised my allergist I wouldn't get another cat after the siamese. She was 12 then and he figured she wouldn't live much longer. He clearly didn't know that siamese often live to 20 and sometimes longer.

Anonymous said...

k8, my allergists always despair that I live with multiple cats. I just take a lot of drugs. :-)

The History Enthusiast said...

NK--I too was very sorry to hear about your kitty. That's a sucky thing to go through. Good luck with the exams too...you'll do great!

As for the Dean Dad comments...I must be missing something by not reading the comments over there. I read him on feed reader only. Someone fill me in on the good gossip!

Oh, and now my puppy has woken up and she's being a terror. She's gotten into the habit of jumping up and grabbing my clothing with her teeth in order to get my attention. Occasionally she gets the skin right on my waist where the bottom of my shirt falls. Ouch!

k8 said...

Thanks NK! It took me three days to name them. I had Plum figured out fairly quickly, but Sophie took longer. I needed to figure out her personality.

Dr. Crazy said...

NK:
It sounds like things are going great! I'm so glad! And yes, who knows what will happen when grades come due, but your narrative does make me feel more positive about the fact that I keep trying to dissuage my students from doing grad school for English. Lawe school isn't necessarily *harder*, which is what mamy of them think. I tell them no, but since I didn't go to law school, they don't believe me. They also don't believe me about the job market in English, even though that is my history, but that's neither here nor there.

The History Enthusiast said...

k8--I saw your Flickr pics, and they are cuties! I especially like Plum. I have a thing for gray cats (though I'm deathly allergic to anything of the feline persuasion).

k8 said...

Since I'm feeling link-happy this evening, I submit this item, sure to please most meat-eating males.

k8--Wow. Just Wow. That is a coronary waiting to happen.

Anonymous said...

No, I wouldn't say law school is harder; it's just really different, especially what with the competition of the curve. And I think any graduate program is going to throw people coming right out of college, who haven't been in grad school before, for a loop - just different loops.

I will say that personally, I think the LSAT is harder than the GRE - for one thing, it's kind of curved too, which the GRE isn't (the same raw number score on the LSAT will be a different actual score depending on how everyone else does). But I don't know how I'd have found the LSAT if I took it when I took the GRE, back when I was more used to taking exams. Ironically, when I took the "analytical reasoning" section on the GRE, I got a perfect score, but that ability dissolved somewhere in the subsequent 15 years.

Okay, after all these wordy comments, I gotta go to sleep! Sweet dreams, everyone!

The History Enthusiast said...

Oh, and my feed reader has popped up stories about my uni in both Inside Higher Ed and The Chronicle. Thankfully it's not a scandal in the history department.

Dr. Crazy said...

DUDE! MEDUSA! IF YOU ARE HERE YOU NEED TO CALL ME (A) AND YOU NEED TO DO A COLLAGE, (B).

Re: My boycott of the DD, it's all about the fact that he did a post about getting rid of darkrooms for cost-cutting reasons, and my response didn't sit well with him, and that made him treat me like crap. Here's the thing: anybody who thinks it's cool to talk about his wife as The Wife and his kids as The Girl and The Boy, and who's willing to import onto his kids all of his own fuckedupness and neurosis, assuming that those kids will be socially ostracized, and that this is some kind of badge of honor? Yeah, I'm done. I can't deal with that.

k8 said...

I know, isn't it! I was intrigued by the idea of the bacon-cinnamon rolls in another post. And I think this is the site that featured bacon-wrapped tater tots, but I'm not sure.

(I don't actually read this site regularly, but people are always posting items from it in the Food Pron Room over at FriendFeed)

The History Enthusiast said...

NK--The GRE is curved. I was in the 96th percentile in the analytical when I took it, but about six months later they changed the test to take out the analytical questions and substitute an analytical writing section. This meant that, last time I checked, my numbers had all gone down (percentage wise). I take this to mean that the test is easier now that it was when I took it in 2002.

The History Enthusiast said...

Crazy--I remember the post about dark rooms, but only vaguely. I should go back and read the comments.

Belle said...

Y'all still here?

Dr. Crazy said...

G'Night, NK!

And bacon-wrapped tater-tots? that seems amazing to me, though this may be because I'm a meat-eating potato-lover....

The comments to that post are basically dumb. He says that in the digital age, darkrooms should be eradicated. A another person comments before me, and then I comment about why that is wrong, and about why he is generally wrong, but in relation to the post. And then, although he typically doesn't bother to respond to his commenters, be commented back to me and called me ignorant. And I was done.

The History Enthusiast said...

I'm here for the moment, but I'm fading fast. I get so damn tired on Fridays!

Dr. Crazy said...

Hey Belle! I'm here - dunno who else is :0

The History Enthusiast said...

Thanks, Crazy. That rings a bell.

Well, I may have to sign off now because my eyes are getting droopy. It has been nice chatting with you all!

Dr. Crazy said...

I get the being tired on Fridays - I only am not because I now have the "I don't teach on Fridays" schedule.

k8 said...

I'm fading and I have no excuse, aside from kitty wrangling. The kitties look like they are about to come over and cat pile on me and my laptop, so it might be a good time to go to bed.

Dr. Crazy said...

G'night, H.E.!

Dr. Crazy said...

K8, A. I understand about the kitties piling on top of one, and B. Thanks for stopping by. Have a good night with the new kittens!

Belle said...

Oh you lucky people, surrounding by feline goodness. I'm in Conf town, catless.

Pity me.

Dr. Medusa said...

I see I am once again clearing the room . . .

Belle said...

Oh. So you're gone too. Okay. Sorry I was late to the party, but maybe the next one will not be a year in coming?

The History Enthusiast said...

Just popping in to say that I found the darkroom post and DD totally overreacted to what you were saying. Dude. He was totally a douche.

life_of_a_fool said...

I wish I had stayed home tonight, and hung out here. Way less crowded, cold, and loud!

The History Enthusiast said...

Ok, I'm going for real now.

G'night everyone! Sleep well!

Dr. Crazy said...

Ok, I suck as a hostess at Crazy Medusa's. I have been absent for ages. At any rate, now I'm tired, so I'm going to bed. And this does indeed mean that I suck, for what if people are here for fun-having? That said, the comment thread is open, and y'all can have your own fun without my moderation.

Hello! Is everyone asleep? Us West Coasters are just warming up for the evening! By which I mean I have tired out my cats with the little cat wand thing and I have given up on grading even though I officially have two more left in my queue for today. Bleah. If I had wine at my place I'd be drinking it. Perhaps hot chocolate instead.
